Like most people, the lockdowns of 2020-2022 were pretty lonely times for me. I’m a writer — I love people, I love listening to stories, I love to talk and share with friends. And not being able to do that with people was really tough for me, as it was for us all.
One of the things that really helped me was going back to something I used to do a lot of, way back in the late 90s and early 00s—
Hold on: as an aside, HOW were the 90s so long ago?! To me it still seems like yesterday but it was in fact TWO DECADES ago… How is that even possible?! …Sorry if I’ve just made you feel as old as I do right now.
—anyway, as I was saying, back in the late 90s and early 00s I would exchange long, juicy emails with my friends — not 240 character bon mots like we do nowadays, but proper epistles, full of gossip and opinions and stuff that really mattered. And during Covid I found myself going back to that. It really, really helped.
It reminded me that there’s nothing more delightful when a deliciously long email drops into your inbox, especially when it’s from someone whose writing you enjoy. That’s why I’m signed up to the book clubs of many of my favourite authors. And I was reading one the other day and thought… I should really have one of those.
And so here it is! The Ava Glass Book Club, open for business, with the promise of regular(ish!) emails filled with all the kinds of stuff I love to read in author newsletters - behind the scenes info about the books, sneak previews of new work, the latest news about the Alias Emma TV series (!!! I know, I’m basically vibrating with excitement about it 90% of the time) and general chat about the things I’ve been thinking about that month. PLUS with every edition I’ll give away something fun to at least one of my readers.
Sign ups are open now and you can join no matter where you are in the world - competitions will always be worldwide. And if you change your mind you can unsubscribe at any time — but I really hope you don’t. Instead I’d love it if you email me back with your thoughts. Because there aren’t enough of those lovely long emails in the world.
